about

"Let's shape the future do you hear me? Let us build new roads do you support me? With these voices we call for solidarity. Let's make peace, would you help me?!" Mohamad Hussein is a rapper from Afghanistan who, with his song “Azadi Azizam”, delivers a fighting speech to those responsible for European refugee policy and points out the abuses in European refugee camps. As a refugee who has been stuck in asylum proceedings on Lesvos for several years, he paints a bleak picture of what his mother once told him as a bedtime story: Instead of a world that, when he grew up, he could fly over and travel like a bird, free and with all possibilities, he now finds walls, barbed wire, border guards, and a world that makes him feel like he is sitting in a cage with broken wings. With poetic force and metaphorical depth, he takes us into his dream, which carries him back to the future narrative of his childhood, but only to see it crumble piece by piece. However, the song does not stop at just describing this reality, it also features a moment of hope in the chorus and a call to fight this actual state. In collaboration with the musician L I N, a strong moment of self-empowerment and the belief that change is possible with one's own and solidary strength thus emerges in the chorus.

lyrics

Azadi Azizam – Freedom Darling

He looked up at the sky and at the raindrops
The dream of peace in the freedom zone in prison
The sound of death to this bitterness and emptiness

Damn shame on you little bird
They grabbed my feathers and said that flying is a terrible crime
I was in the cage - dreaming that I was a wild bird
Mountains and sea, forest or desert
Jumping and flying without fear – with the flock or alone
Homeless but free, I sang with the trees
I danced and I went with the wind and the waves and the clouds
I did not see any cage.  I did not see any border guard
I was flying everywhere without a passport - anonymously
I did not see any deportation or pushback.
I did not see any birds without wings and feathers
An armed crow or a popular parrot
Race and differences, government and politics, no, I did not see any prisoner

I saw freedom
I saw enlightenment
I saw love kindness
Inside the darkness
I was like asleep
I was free in the dream
Damn this name (immigrant)
And damn these borders

Let’s shape the future
Do you hear me?
Let us build new roads
Do you support me?
With these voices we call for solidarity
Let’s make peace – Would you help us ?!
Would you help us
please?!

Azadi Azizam - Freedom Darling

Breathless birds
in this cursed forest
Like a cage
Fenced
A long hand reaching out for peace
But with a knife hidden in the fist
I hate this.
But I have to fly to freedom.

Earth has no mercy.  The sun is no longer shining
See the forests dry up.  Blood is white like snow

My mother used to say that flying is beautiful in the sky
Rising above the clouds.  You sing freedom is ours
Love becomes a secret with you.  You try to fly again but you are wingless and alone.
It gets better every day with peace.  War means the end of flight
Flying is a lie, everyone here has broken their wings
„Rising through the pain and love“ is just a phrase mother
My sky is black.  The world is a place to hunt, see
Her child is alone, she's screaming: „Don't die baby!“
Peace has died at the bottom of the Sea. Freedom is a worthless word
The war, this bitter truth, has killed our future

Let’s shape the future
Do you hear me?
Let us build new roads
Do you support me?
With these voices we call for solidarity
Let’s make peace – Do you hear me?!
Would you help us
please?!
